On Oct. 25, the Grand Hyatt Manila became the venue of the Austrian National Day. Ambassador Johann Brieger and his lovely wife, Roswitha Brieger, welcomed esteemed guests, including Austria’s State Secretary for Tourism, Susanne Kraus-Winkler, and Secretary General Karlheinz Kopf, who flew in from Vienna to commemorate this historic day and strengthen ties between their country and the Philippines.

In his speech that evening, Ambassador Brieger melded eloquence with sobering realities. “On the Austrian National Day, we commemorate our rise from the ashes of World War II based on the concept of the rule of law,” he said, drawing poignant parallels between Austria’s historical struggles and the contemporary challenges faced by the Philippines. In a nod to recent geopolitical events, Ambassador Brieger expressed concern over the violation of the rules-based international order. “The acceptance of the rule of law, violated since February 24 last year in Europe and severely under stress after recent terrorist attacks and the escalating situation since in the Middle East, is also at risk in your waters in the West Philippine Sea.”

Celebrating 77 years of diplomatic relations, the ambassador delved into the deepening connection between Austria and the Philippines. “Our connection has grown stronger year after year,” he emphasized. Not merely diplomatic partners, the two nations have fostered positive developments in trade and collaborative initiatives.

Ambassador Brieger substantiated his words with concrete examples. “In the field of trade, Austria and the Philippines have enjoyed positive developments in the last years, with our trade numbers showing a strong upside trajectory,” he said, highlighting the increasing interest of Austrian businesses, evidenced by the second visit of an Austrian trade delegation that year.

One standout example of this thriving trade relationship was the arrival of sustainably fished tuna from the Philippines to Austria. “As a small but yet significant sign to walk-the-talk on sustainability, a big Austrian retail chain has chosen a partner from the Philippines for MSC-certified sustainably fished tuna,” said the ambassador. This collaboration not only provides the best product for consumers in Europe but also ensures a regular income to small fishing communities and their families in Mindoro.

A significant announcement marked the evening—the signing of an MoU on the Recruitment of Qualified Professionals. “This will open opportunities to soon invite more highly skilled Filipinos to join the 30,000 already living in Austria,” said the ambassador.

The cultural exchange was palpable with the Youth Orchestra of the Manila Symphony enchanting the audience. Ambassador Brieger extended his gratitude, saying, “It fills me with pride that they have agreed to grace this event with their musical performances. The MSO is practically a partner of Austria for almost a century now.”

The evening continued with a feast of Austrian delicacies, prepared by Grand Hyatt Manila executive chef Mark Hagan and his team and a dance performance transporting the guests to what is practically a Viennese ball.

The presence of Susanne Kraus-Winkler and Karlheinz Kopf at the event underscored the commitment to strengthen economic ties. Prior to the National Day celebration, a meeting with Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual focused on identifying investment opportunities and enhancing trade between the nations. Austria reiterated its commitment to deepening economic cooperation in promising sectors.

A day after the celebrations, State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler furthered the dialogue, holding a meeting with Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. The bilateral exchange aimed at strengthening cooperation between Austria and the Philippines and exploring potentially beneficial opportunities for tourism.

The ambassador led a toast to the good health of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. and to the happiness and prosperity of the Filipino and Austrian peoples. The celebration wasn’t just about revelry. It was a reaffirmation of the enduring bond between two nations, grounded in history and reaching toward a future of strengthened collaboration.

While the women’s lines were an expected hit, I also enjoyed seeing his pieces for the men. I find that Quiñones makes some of the best-fitting barongs in the country today. One of his talents is how he gets to add a touch of whimsy to it without taking the elegance and sophistication of the national attire. Congratulations to Puey and we look forward to see what you’ll be coming up with next!
