UP, NU look to boost twice-to-beat bid vs separate foes

University of the Philippines and National University eye to boost their respective twice-to-beat bids against separate foes in the second round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. 

The Fighting Maroons and the Bulldogs share identical 9-2 records in the standings and have both claimed their Final Four spots earlier this week.

UP will take on the lowly Far Eastern University at 2 p.m. as the first serving of the weekend double-header. 

Reigning MVP Malick Diouf and graduating CJ Cansino are expected to carry the Fighting Maroons on their backs against the team that sent them to their first overtime game in the first round of the tournament.

While UP shifts its focus on another goal, FEU is on the brink of elimination as it continues to hold on for dear life with a 3-8 slate. 

Although the Tamaraws remain qualified for a playoff chance, the odds are stacked against them as their bid for a spot heavily relies on the results of other matches. 

Meanwhile, NU battles with the already-ran University of Santo Tomas (1-10) at 4 p.m.

The Bulldogs reached their back-to-back Final Four appearances following a 68-57 rout of the Tamaraws. 

NU remained in a must-win situation for all its three remaining games if it wishes to clinch one of the two coveted armors going into the Final Four. 

On the other hand, the Growling Tigers missed out on the semifinals for the third straight time in another sorry season under returning champion coach Pido Jarencio. 

Despite the fact, UST is still looking to end the season on a bright note.
