China's coast guard asserts claim over WPS, cites PH 'infringement' on Chinese waters

China has repeated its position over its West Philippine Sea claim as it justified anew its dangerous actions against a Philippine resupply boat off Ayungin Shoal on Friday, seemingly disregarding the hundreds of diplomatic protests already filed against Beijing by Manila.

In a statement, China's Coast Guard (CCG) claimed the Philippines had no permission from the Chinese government in deploying its two small cargo ships and three coast guard ships when they entered into the waters of Ayungin Shoal (Ren'ai Jiao), which it claimed belongs to China.

Ayungin Shoal is part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Gan Yu, CCG's spokesman, said the agency "tracked and monitored the ships" and "took regulatory measures." He also claimed the Philippines is infringing on China's territorial sovereignty and violating the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

The incident was seen by the Philippine government as harassment. Earlier this year, there were also other dangerous actions committed by China against the Philippines, which the latter also saw as harassment.

"China Coast Guard (CCG) and Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM) vessels recklessly harassed, blocked, and executed dangerous maneuvers in another attempt to illegally impede or obstruct a routine resupply and rotation mission to BRP SIERRA MADRE (LS 57) at Ayungin Shoal," a statement from the National Task Force-West Philippine Sea read.

"CCG vessel 5203 deployed a water cannon against Philippine supply vessel M/L Kalayaan in an illegal though unsuccessful attempt to force the latter to alter course," it added.

As of October 23, a total of 465 diplomatic protests have been filed by Manila against Beijing since January 2020, including the 55 that were filed this year. Only some of them were replied to, according to DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza.

Friday's incident was the second water cannon attack committed by China this year after the one in August, which was also subject to diplomatic protest.

Gan urged the Philippines to immediately "stop its infringement behavior" as CCG "will continue to carry out law enforcement activities in the waters under China's jurisdiction in accordance with the law, and resolutely safeguard China's national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests."
