Also-ran UST eyes decent finish in UAAP 86

It’s been another forgettable year for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers as their last-gasp efforts went nowhere in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament.

At 1-10, a similar record they had in the standings last season, UST was officially eliminated from Final Four for the third straight year.

UST previously ended its 19-game slump, its longest in school history, with a 68-62 victory over Far Eastern University last Oct. 22.

Just when hope had been finally restored amid their shaky season, the Growling Tigers found themselves in another string of defeats with the latest beating coming from defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles earlier this week, 69-57.

Despite the frustration that comes with losing and no longer being in contention, the UST coaching staff gave due credit to the players, whose morale has taken a hit for the second year in a row.

“I think the most encouraging part this season despite short kami lagi, tina-try ng mga players i-fill ‘yong gaps na nawala sa amin in the beginning. Just frustrating lang kasi you can see ‘yong efforts ng mga players. We just couldn't get the win,” said UST deputy Japs Cuan.

“Ang hirap kasi we are really pushing the guys, it just so happened na makikita mo pagod na pagod na sila. ‘Yong rotation naghahanap talaga si coach (Pido Jarencio) ng mabubunot. Siguro ‘yong consistency ng iba naming mga players, day in day out, tapos minsan off iyong isa. Parang for us to really win, lahat talaga dapat mag-contribute,” he added.

The Growling Tigers are now looking to “give a good fight in the last three games” which proves to be tough as they are set to face the top two sides NU Bulldogs and UP Fighting Maroons in back-to-back matches.

Although badly bruised and beaten, sophomore guard Nic Cabañero has been the closest to consistency that UST would get this season.

While their game plan and preparations fail to materialize inside the court, Cabañero has put the España-squad on his back in as many games.

“Wala naman na kaming masabi kay Nic kasi he’s trying. Last game, nag off the bench siya, today nag start siya. We are really trying to think outside the box. Parang na nakikita ko na rin ang bigat na ng legs niya pagod na pagod na rin siya ‘yong average niya sa amin parang 30 minutes buhat talaga siya. Credit din to Nic for not giving up,” Cuan said.
