Filipino, Japanese surfers top Siargao Int’l Surfing Cup 2023


BUTUAN CITY – Filipino John Mark Tokong and Japanese Anon Matsuoka emerged on top of the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3000 event, in General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

“Nalipay ko nga midaug (I'm so happy to take this win),” said Tokong, also known as  “Marama,” who garnered 3,000 points in the men’s division, way ahead of Koh Azuchi of Japan with 2,340 points and third placers Ketut Agus of Indonesia and Shohei Kato of Japan who had garnered 1,825 points each in the Men’s Division.

Matsuoka topped the distaff side with 3,000 points. In second place was Sky Brown of Great Britain with 2,340 points and Filipino Nilbie Blancada and Kana Nakashio of Japan at third with 1,835 points.

Winners in the October 25 to November 1 competition received a total of $45,000 or P2.5 million in prizes, trophies, and tokens during the awarding ceremony in General Luna on Wednesday, November 1.

General Luna Mayor Sol F. Matugas, Surigao del Norte Rep. Francisco Jose “Bingo” Matugas II, and Department of Tourism (DOT)-13 Director Ivonnie B. Dumadag thanked local officials, stakeholders, sponsors, and supporters and congratulated all those who made the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup an unforgettable success.
 
“This premier surfing event has once again demonstrated the captivating beauty and unparalleled charm of Siargao, further establishing it as a world-renowned surfing destination,” Dumadag said.

“The dedication, passion, and sheer talent displayed by the surfers from across the globe were nothing short of inspiring,” she said, adding “Siargao, known for its legendary surf breaks, provided the perfect canvas for these athletes to showcase their skills, and they did so with remarkable grace and intensity.”
