Bulakenyos reject San Jose del Monte City's shift to HUC

A total of 820,385 Bulakenyos rejected during a plebiscite held on Monday, Oct. 30, the proposal for the City of San Jose del Monte (CSJDM) to attain a Highly Urbanized City (HUC) status and make it autonomous from the province of Bulacan.

The plebiscite was held simultaneous with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on Monday.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported on Wednesday, Nov. 1, that a total of 820,385 residents voted “no” on CSJDM’s shift, while only 620,707 voted "yes," or agreed to the proposal. 

Based on  the  certificate of canvass of votes released by the Comelec on Wednesday, only 1,608,004 out of 2,092,248 registered voters in CSJDM actually voted during the plebiscite.

In a two-page manifesto, 23 mayors from different Bulacan cities and municipalities expressed their support to the conversion of  CSJDM into a highly urbanized city.

They cited Section 452 of Republic Act No. 7160 (the Local Government Code of 1991), which "provides that cities with a minimum population of 2000,000 inhabitants as certified by the Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA), and with the latest annual income of at least P50 million based on 1992 constant prices, as certified by the Treasurer, shall be classified as highly-urbanized cities.

Days before the scheduled plebiscite, Bulacan Governor Daniel R. Fernando, through his official Facebook page, expressed his side about the CSJDM-HUC plebiscite.

"Noon pa man ay aking sinabi na (I already said before), let the people decide, dahil ito ang diwa ng demokrasya (because this is the essence of democracy), know the issues, then vote wisely," he said.

He added that "no father would be happy if one of his children will be separated from him."

Former Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado appealed to Bulakenyos to vote "no" to CSJDM’s HUC shift. 

Alvarado stated that the province should not be divided and must remain united for the sake of the next generations of Bulakenyos,
