Trans woman crowned Miss Portugal 2023

Marina Machete, a 28-year-old transwoman working as flight attendant made history recently, being the first of her ilk to win Miss Universe Portugal.

Marina bested 16 participants for the title.

Talking to media following her win, Marina said she is "proud to be the first trans woman to compete for the title of Miss Universe Portugal."

She will be representing her country at the prestigious Miss Universe pageant to be held November in El Salvador.

Marina will not be the only trans woman at the tilt as the Netherlands will be fielding in trans woman Rikkie Valerie Kolle, who is also the first transgender woman to win Miss Netherlands.

Not coincidentally, the Miss Universe Organization, the group behind the Miss Universe pageant, is now owned by Thai transgender businesswoman Anne Jakkapong Jakrajutatip, CEO of the Thailand-based media company JKN Global Group.

Spanish beauty Angela Ponce broke barriers joining the 67th Miss Universe pageant. The 27-year-old was the first transgender woman to ever participate in the international competition.
