Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera hailed on Sunday, Oct. 8 the key personalities behind Gilas Pilipinas' historic gold medal win in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
“This gold medal victory is not just about a remarkable sporting achievement; it is a sign of brighter things to come for Philippine basketball, inspiring our youth to dream big, work tirelessly, and underscoring the potential and talent within our nation." Herrera said in a statement Sunday.
Herrera extended her congratulations and gratitude to all those who contributed to the historic triumph, which marked the end of a 61-year gold medal drought for the Philippines in the Asian Games.
She expressed her admiration for the visionary leadership of Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan, or MVP. “MVP’s unwavering support and commitment to Philippine basketball have played a pivotal role in this success,” she pointed out.
“We also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of San Miguel Corp. chief Ramon S. Ang (RSA), whose corporate partnership has bolstered the team's journey to the top,” Herrera said.
“The strategic brilliance of Coach Tim Cone and the commendable efforts of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBD), led by Commissioner Willie Marcial, also played an important role in nurturing the talent and potential of our athletes, culminating in this historic gold medal victory,” she added.
Herrera said she believes that Gilas Pilipinas' triumph is not just a moment of celebration, but also a significant turning point for Philippine basketball, as she urged all Filipinos to “rally behind our athletes and continue supporting the growth of Philippine sports.”
“With continued dedication, investment, and teamwork, we can achieve even greater success on the international stage,” Herrera concluded.
