The Quezon City local government announced the winners of the first-ever "Quezon City Green Awards" held on Friday, Oct. 6.

The Public Information Office (PIO) said the city has received a total of 80 entries from barangays, Sangguniang Kabataan, youth-based organizations, and businesses for the Green and Resilient Award.
Launched in May, the Quezon City Green Awards: Search for Outstanding Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Action Programs is designed to acknowledge and provide incentives to barangays, Sangguniang Kabataan, youth-based organizations, and businesses that implement innovative and inclusive initiatives in the fields of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Action.
The Quezon City Green Award has two categories -- the Green Award and the Resiliency Award.
The Green Award honors institutions that have significant contributions in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable practices, while the Resiliency Award is given to initiatives that demonstrate resilience and preparedness in the face of natural and human-induced hazards.
During the awarding ceremony, each winner will receive P100,000 cash.
The Special Citation Award in Green category went to District 6- Barangay Culiat, District 5 - Barangay Novaliches Proper, and District 3 - Barangay West Kamias.
The Barangays of Batasan Hills and Bagong Silangan won the Special Award in Resilient category.
The top winner for Green Barangay in Green category is Barangay Talipapa, while Barangay Culiat is the top Green Barangay in Resiliency category.
“These community green programs and projects only prove that the city and the community can work together towards a common goal: to create a sustainable, green, and liveable future for all,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.
Data showed that Quezon City stands out as one of the pioneering cities in the Philippines in actively advocating climate justice.
In 2019, the city declared a climate emergency, which catalyzed the development of numerous climate solutions and the enactment of significant environmental ordinances.
The city holds the distinction of being the only city in the Philippines that is a member of the C40 Cities, a worldwide network of mayors dedicated to taking immediate action to address the climate crisis and establish a future where everyone can flourish.
