Carlos Yulo stumbled in his bid to become a world champion in floor exercise this year after missing the podium Saturday night, Oct. 7, in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Tokyo Olympian came in fourth in the apparatus final with a score of 14.500, settling behind eventual champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel.
Dolgopyat, also the reigning Olympic champion who topped the two-day qualifications, lived up to his billing with his flawless execution and scored 14.866 for his first world championship title in the apparatus.
He finished silver in the 2017 Montreal and the 2019 Stuttgart editions.
Japan’s Kazuki Minami bagged the silver with 14.666 while Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi took home the bronze with 14.600, giving his country its first world championship medal since 1997.
Competing with a 6.300 degree of difficulty, Yulo tried to impress the judges with his routine that involved a 2.5 twice to front double pike, a double layout full, a triple twist side pass and a 3.5 twist.
But it was not enough to land him on the podium as he only managed 8.200 in execution.
This marked the first time that Yulo would be going home without a medal in the worlds since making heads turn in the 2018 Doha edition.
Despite the outcome, Yulo has already earned a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics as the highest-ranked eligible athlete in the floor exercise.
All eight finalists in the apparatus have already qualified either in the team and all-around events.
