
Volkswagen adds yet another SUV to its lineup in the form of the Tharu, named after the an ethnic tribe indigenous to the Terai in southern Nepal and northern India. The Tharu is a compact crossover that slots above the T-Cross and takes the place of the Tiguan.

The Tharu is hard to miss thanks to its LED daytime running lamps that stretch across the new honeycomb grille. They end at stacked headlights on either end. The rear gets the same treatment with full-width LED taillights that stretch across the tailgate. Other unique style features include large side air vents on the front bumper, smaller side vents on the rear bumper and a skid plate on the bottom of the bumper. It rolls on large 18-inch alloy wheels on 225/50 series tires.

Passengers will enjoy the interior as the Tharu boasts of many high-tech features. Among them is a fully-digital instrument cluster for the driver called the Active Info Display. There’s also power-adjustable front seats (driver only on the SE).
The main touchscreen infotainment system features a 12-inch screen (eight inches for the SE variant). The system also supports gesture control for easier manipulation of the controls. It also gets Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and USB.
Passengers can connect their phones via a pair of USB-C ports come standard on the top-of-the-line SEL and charge via a wireless charging pad. The SE variant gets a USB port. Meanwhile, the rear passengers get two more USB ports for charging their devices.

All variants have two-tone leather seats while the SEL version gets heated front seats. Other interior features include interior ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power tailgate, a reverse camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, and an electronic parking brake with auto hold.

Powering the Tharu is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It makes 160-PS at 5,500 rpm with 250-Nm of torque between 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. It’s paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. The SEL version comes with selectable drive modes that include; Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom.
The Tharu is now available at all VW showrooms, priced at P1.808 million for the TSI DSG SE and P1.945 million for the TSI DSG SEL.
