House Speaker Martin Romualdez has called on his fellow public servants in government to "cushion [the] impact of rising prices and inflation" for Filipinos and to "focus on service in these trying times".
"Now, more than ever, is the time for unity and teamwork. Let's roll up our sleeves, work double-time, and deliver real results for our kababayans," Romualdez, the leader of 300-plus strong House of Representatives, said in a statement Friday, Oct. 6.
A day earlier, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the inflation rate raced to 6.1 percent in September, from 5.3 percent in August.
With the onset of the local harvest season, Romualdez said he believes that prices of daily necessities, especially food, will start to go down.
"But this isn't just about waiting for harvests. This is about all of us in government coming together to ensure our people feel relief faster," said the Leyte 1st district congressman.
He noted that the government has been proactive in launching initiatives to aid those most affected by the rising prices, caused by global inflation.
A new digital food stamp program has been introduced, Romualdez noted. It grants struggling families a monthly allowance of P3,000.
He described this program as a lifeline for families facing food scarcity. It also provides extra support to pregnant and nursing mothers.
Understanding the pressures of rising fuel costs, the Speaker noted that aid is also being channeled to drivers of public transportation like jeepneys and buses to offset their fuel expenses.
“Farmers, the heroes behind our country's food supply, haven’t been overlooked. Financial assistance is flowing to rice farmers, with an additional incentive; the government is committing to purchase their rice yields at improved rates, safeguarding their livelihoods and ensuring they receive just compensation for their hard work,” the House leader noted.
Romualdez also highlighted President Marcos' initiative to eliminate extra charges on national roads.
“By cutting down these additional costs, we can anticipate a potential reduction in market prices, benefitting the everyday Filipino consumer,” explained the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) president.
“Our collective action, from local government units to national agencies, must reflect a single, unified goal...Only through synchronized efforts can we truly serve our people and fulfill our mandate," he further said.
