NPA fighter killed in Abra encounter

BANGUED, Abra – A New People’s Army rebel was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Sitio Lamunan, Barangay Gacab, Malibcong, Abra on Tuesday, October 3.

Capt. Bryan Albano, head of the civil-military operations unit of the Army 501st Infantry Brigade, said the military is still in the process of identifying the slain communist guerrilla from the Komiteng Larangang Gerilya North Abra (KLG North Abra).

Albano said troops from the Army 24th Infantry Battalion were deployed to Sitio Lamunan after residents reported the presence of armed men.

Soldiers engaged an undetermined number of NPA in a 15-minute gun battle when they reached the area, after which the rebels escaped and left their slain comrade and dragged the wounded.

Recovered from the encounter site were one M14 rifle, one M4A1 carbine rifle, four magazine assembly, 42 bullets for carbine, 16 bullets for M14 rifle, one bandolier, one backpack, subversive documents, medical supplies, and personal belongings.

Albano said that the encounter weakened the KLG North Abra led by “Ka Awry” who came from Mindanao to revive and strengthen the group.

Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Melchor C. dela Cruz, commander of the 501st Infantry Brigade, urged NPA remnants in the Ilocos provinces and Cordillera surrender and achieve lasting peace and development in the countryside.

Dela Cruz assured that they are steadfast in pursuing remaining NPA in Abra and Ilocos until they are totally neutralized.
