LRT-2 ridership reaches 4M in August

Over four million people rode the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) in August in what was considered as its highest ridership in a single month in nearly four years, according to its operator LRT Authority (LRTA).

The LRTA said that passenger volume at LRT-2 was recorded at 4.37 million in August, the highest since September 2019’s 5.94 million.

Total ridership at the railway has jumped by 83 percent to 31.35 million as of August, from 17.15 million a year ago due to improvements that resulted in an increased number of trains and reduced waiting time of passengers.

The LRTA collected P105.79 million from passengers in August which marked the highest amount in almost four years. In return, the agency has already surpassed last year's total revenue in rail services of P624.83 million with P660.59 million earnings this year.

“The ridership growth is a manifestation of stronger customer preference for LRT-2 over other modes of transportation. It is a significant achievement for our employees who have focused on increasing the number of trains and trips, reducing queueing time and travel time, as well as improving the safety, security and cleanliness of the stations,” said LRTA Administrator lawyer Hernando T. Cabrera.

With adjusted fares in place, the company expects to raise P1.2 billion this year, the LRTA said, in line with its objective of growing rail revenue to P1.66 billion in 2024, P2.19 billion in 2025, and P2.33 billion in 2026.

The fare increase will encourage banks to provide P10.12 billion for the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project, according to the LRTA.

To satisfy the increased demand, the project aims to build LRT-2 stops in Tutuban, Divisoria, and Pier 4 and purchase 20 new light rail vehicles.

For 2023, the LRTA projects LRT-2 ridership to reach 55.91 million. It also expects passenger traffic to hit at least 70.49 million in 2024, 92.89 million in 2025 and 98.69 million in 2026.

LRTA is a consortium put up by Metro Pacific Investments Corp., Ayala Corp., and Macquarie Infrastructure Holdings and took over the operations and management of LRT-2 in September 2015.

The LRTA said it was counting on the rise of passenger numbers to boost its ticket sales, especially as it was recently granted permission to collect additional fares. (Trixee Rosel)
