The Water Accounts of the Philippines, as compiled by the Environment and Natural Resources Accounts Division showed an increase in the country’s overall water use efficiency (WUE) in 2022.

In a collected data released on Thursday, Oct. 5 showed that last year’s consumption went up to P211.04 per cubic meter of water, 5.5 percent higher than P200.09 per cubic meter in 2021.

Water use efficiency is described as the value added per volume of water consumed by its cubic meter.

In 2022, the highest WUE recorded went to the services sector, as it gained over P1,300.73 per cubic meter.

Subsequently, the industry sector had a WUE of P426.85 per cubic meter while the agriculture sector had P15.49 per cubic meter.

The total freshwater withdrawal recorded a comparable increase from 2021 and 2022. From 89 billion cubic meters (bcm) to 91 bcm.

Total freshwater withdrawal is the volume of freshwater extracted from rivers, lakes, and/or aquifers that is needed for agriculture, municipalities, etc.

There was also a 27.8 percent increase in the level of water stress or freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources.

To compare, the water stress level in 2021 was 27.2 percent.

Moreover, the level of water stress remained within the average range for the low-level classification of 25 to 50 percent.

A 2.1 percent increase was also recorded in the total water abstraction, also known as the amount of water that is removed from its source either permanently or temporarily.

In contrast, the 2.1 percent increase, or 226 bcm in 2022 is higher than 221.3 bcm in 2021.

When it came to households’ water expenses, a total of P59.37 billion was written for 2022. This was followed by P47.12 billion brought by mining and quarrying, manufacturing, and construction.

Other industries, which were mainly services, had P38.32 billion of their water expenses.

All of the data was collected annually and provided indicators of water use efficiency, water stress, water abstraction, and water expenses of different sectors in the country.

The supply and consumption of water resources followed the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) 2012 Central Framework.

The system was validated as an international statistical standard. This was also in line with the System of National Accounts, according to Asst. Secretary Divina Del Prado of the Sectoral Statistics Office. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
