No damage, fatalities in 6.4 Davao Occidental tremor


BUTUAN CITY – The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported no damage and fatalities from the magnitude-6.4 earthquake that rattled Davao Occidental on Wednesday night, October 4.

However, the OCD and PDRRMO are still closely monitoring the effects of the moderately strong earthquake.

The PDRRMO and concerned agencies are checking all buildings and establishments in the province to further assess the impact of the tremor.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the earthquake at 7:21 p.m. was 66 kilometers (kms) southeast of Sarangani Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The tremor had a depth of 139 kms, Phivolcs said.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Sarangani and Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani; and City of Digos, Davao del Sur;

Intensity IV (moderately strong) in the City of General Santos; City of Koronadal, Tupi, T'boli, Polomolok, South Cotabato; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; and Palembang and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat;

Intensity III (weak) in City of Davao; Alamada, Banisilan, City of Kidapawan, Magpet, Makilala, M'lang, Matalam, Pigcawayan, and Tulunan, Cotabato; Kalamansig, Lambayong, President Quirino, Sen. Ninoy Aquino, and City of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat; and Lake Sebu, Tampakan, Santo Niño, and Surallah, South Cotabato.

The earthquake was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in the City of Zamboanga; Antipas, Arakan, Libungan, and President Roxas, Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat; San Fernando and Kalilangan, Bukidnon; City of Gingoog, Midamis Oriental; Tantangan, South Cotabato; Cotabato City, and Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte.

Phivolcs said the earthquake as "scarcely perceptible" in the City of Cagayan de Oro, Pangantucan and Cabanglasan, Bukidnon, and Aleosan, Cotabato.

The earthquake was tectonic, caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs anticipates aftershocks from the earthquake.
