A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Davao Occidental at around 7:21 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 66 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island, said Phivolcs.
Phivolcs initially recorded a magnitude of 6.1, but revised it to 6.4-magnitude.
The earthquake, Phivolcs said, had a depth of 139 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in
City of Digos, Davao del Sur; Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, Malita, Santa Maria and Sarangani, Davao Occidental; and Glan, Kiamba, Maitum and Malungon, Sarangani.
The earthquake was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Pantukan, Davao de Oro; City of Tagum, Davao del Norte; Matanao, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; Manay and City of Mati, Davao Oriental; Alabel, Maasim and Malapatan, Sarangani; City of Koronadal, Polomolok, T'Boli, and Tupi, South Cotabato; City of General Santos; and Esperanza, Lebak, Lutayan and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Mawab and Monkayo, Davao de Oro; Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; Banaybanay, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, Governor Generoso, San Isidro and Tarragona, Davao Oriental; Alamada, Banisilan, City of Kidapawan, M'lang, Magpet, Makilala, Matalam, Midsayap, Pigkawayan and Tulunan, Cotabato; Banga, Lake Sebu, Norala, Santo Niño, Surallah and Tampakan, South Cotabato; Columbio, Isulan, Kalamansig, Lambayong, President Quirino, Senator Ninoy Aquino and City of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.
The quake was also "slightly felt" at Intensity II in
City of Zamboanga; Kalilangan, San Fernando and Talakag, Bukidnon; City of Gingoog, Misamis Oriental; Maco, Davao de Oro; Baganga, Davao Oriental; Antipas, Arakan, Kabacan, Libungan and President Roxas, Cotabato; Tantangan, South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat; Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao; and City of Cotabato.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs recorded the earthquake was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Baungon, Cabanglasan, Don Carlos, Impasug-ong, Libona, Maramag and Pangantucan, Bukidnon; City of Cagayan de Oro; Aleosan, Carmen and Pikit, Cotabato.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
While damages are not expected, Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks due to the quake. (Lizst Torres Abello)
