Magnitude 5.7 quake rocks Cagayan province — Phivolcs


A 5.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Calayan, Cagayan at around 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 17 kilometers, while its epicenter was traced 17 kilometers northeast of Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan.

It initially recorded the quake’s magnitude of 6.2, but Philvolcs revised it to 5.7.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Calayan, Cagayan.

It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Lacub and Tineg, Abra; Calanasan, Flora, Luna and Santa Marcela, Apayao; Kibungan, Benguet; Bontoc and Sagada, Mountain Province; Adams, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Dumalneg, City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, San Nicolas, Sarrat and Vintar, Ilocos Norte; Abulug, Alcala, Allacapan, Amulung, Aparri, Baggao, Ballesteros, Buguey, Camalaniugan, Claveria, Enrile, Gattaran, Gonzaga, Iguig, Lal-Lo, Lasam, Pamplona, Peñablanca, Piat, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes, Santa Teresita, Santo Niño, Solana and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity III (weak) in La Paz, Lagayan and Licuan-Baay, Abra; Conner, Kabugao and Pudtol, Apayao; City of Baguio; Mankayan, Benguet; Aguinaldo, Alfonso Lista and Hingyon, Ifugao; Balbalan, Lubuagan, Pasil, Pinukpuk, Rizal, City of Tabuk, Tanudan and Tinglayan, Kalinga; Bauko, Natonin and Tadian, Mountain Province; Badoc, Banna, City of Batac, Carasi, Currimao, Dingras, Marcos, Nueva Era, Paoay, Piddig and Pinili, Ilocos Norte; Cabugao, Magsingal, Nagbukel, San Juan, Sinait and City of Vigan, Ilovos Sur; Rizal and Tuao, Cagayan.

It was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in Bangued, Bucloc, Dolores, Lagangilang, San Juan and Tayum, Abra; Sablan, Benguet; Tinoc, Ifugao; Paracelis, Mountain Province; Solsona, Ilocos Norte; Alilem, Bantay, Burgos, City of Candon, Caoayan, Cervantes, Galimuyod, Gregorio del Pilar, Lidlidda, Narvacan, Quirino, Salcedo, San Emilio, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, San Vicente, Santa, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santa Lucia, Santa Maria, Santiago, Santo Domingo and Sigay, Ilocos Sur; Basco, Ivana, Mahatao, Sabtang and Uyugan, Batanes; Angadanan, Benito Soliven, Cabagan, City of Cauayan, Divilacan, Gamu, City of Ilagan, Maconacon, Naguilian, Palanan, Quezon, Reina Mercedes, San Guillermo, San Mariano, San Pablo, Santa Maria, Santo Tomas and Tumauini, Isabela.

The earthquake was "scarcely percetible" at Intensity I in Banayoyo, Sugpon, Suyo and Tagudin, Ilocos Sur; and Delfin Albano, Mallig, Quirino and Roxas, Isabela, said Phivolcs.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
