Ilocos Norte reports no damage from 5.7 tremor


LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – The Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) is closely monitoring the effects of the moderately strong magnitude-5.7 earthquake that jolted extreme Northern Luzon before noon on Wednesday, October 4.

Randy Nicolas of the PDRRM Ilocos Norte said that they have not received any report on the damage caused by the earthquake from the local government units (LGUs) in the province.

However, he said the engineering offices of the LGUs are closely assessing all the buildings and establishments in their areas to further monitor the impact of the tremor.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said  the tectonic quake occurred at about 11:35 a.m. with the epicenter located offshore at 17 kilometers northeast of Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan with a depth of 17 kilometers.

It was felt at Intensity 5 in Calayan, Cagayan; Intensity 4 in Lacub, Abra; Adams, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Carasi, Dumalneg, this city, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, San Nicolas, and Sarrat, Ilocos Norte; Peñablanca, Piat, Santo Niño, Solana, and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan;

Intensity 3 in Licuan-Baay, Abra; Balbalan, Lubuagan, and Pasil, Kalinga; City of Batac, Currimao, Marcos, Paoay, and Pinili, Ilocos Norte; Intensity 2 in Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte; Basco, Batanes, and Angadanan, Cabagan, Maconacon, San Mariano, and San Pablo,  Isabela; and Intensity 1 in Delfin Albano, Isabela.

Phivolcs advised residents in extreme Northern Luzon to be vigilant as the quake will cause aftershocks.
