Elderly Japanese dies in Kabankalan City fire


BACOLOD CITY – An elderly Japanese died in a fire that hit his house in Purok Lumboy, Barangay Tabugon, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, October 3.

The victim was identified as 80-year-old Gaiji Fukuda.

Fire Officer 3 John Direck Villaruz, chief investigator of the Kabankalan City Fire Station, said the victim was alone at home when the fire broke out from his bedroom at 9:20 a.m.

Villaruz said the victim’s wife left her husband who was sleeping at that time  to check their sugarcane harvest.

He said that their neighbors and some sugarcane field workers tried to rescue the victim but the fire was already big.

Fire out was declared around 11:05 a.m. and the victim was found inside his bedroom. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Villaruz said that no other houses were affected by the fire that left an estimated P117,000 worth of damage.

Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of fire.

Villaruz said the victim will be subjected to autopsy to determine the cause of his death based on the decision of the wife.
