Semicon, electronics sector to assess parts localization

Published Oct 31, 2023 12:00 pm

The Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation Inc. (SEIPI) said it will evaluate and assess the localization of specific items or categories crucial to the sector and identify areas that require more work to further push for parts localization of the domestic industry.

In a statement, SEIPI said it emphasized this effort at the 18th Philippine Semiconductor and Electronics Convention and Exhibition (PSECE 2023), held at the World Trade Center Manila last October 25 to 27.

SEIPI, the leading organization of multinational and Filipino-owned semiconductor and electronics companies in the Philippines, welcomed some 10,000 guests at the PSECE event.

SEIPI said it continues to monitor the enhanced messaging service (EMS) and short message service (SMS) items of its members as part of its localization endeavor over the past few months.

Through its parts localization technical working group (TWG), SEIPI said it will review the industry's position in terms of localization amid persistent challenges. This pronouncement comes after its recent industry event aimed at further transforming the country's semiconductor and electronics sector.

Employing over three million direct and indirect workers, the Philippine semiconductor and electronics sector is a significant driver of the local economy and the largest contributor to the country’s manufacturing sector.

In 2022, the total Philippine electronics exports grew by 6.88 percent and reached an all-time high of $45.09 billion. This export performance is 13 percent higher than the pre-pandemic exports of $43.3 billion.

As of August 2023, the cumulative electronics exports reached $29.35 billion. This was 61.40 percent of the $47.81 billion total Philippine commodity exports, thus retaining the industry’s position as the country’s top commodity exporter.

SEIPI's steadfast commitment to its member companies and the industry, combined with productive collaborations with various government agencies, has yielded significant achievements in several key areas.

Through collaborative efforts involving key stakeholders such as the Departments of Trade and Industry (DTI), Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), Bureau of Customs (BOC), and Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), SEIPI is actively contributing to positive transformation and growth, it said.

Meanwhile, the annual PSECE convention, with the main theme “Positioning the Philippine Electronics Industry to the Next Industrial Revolution,” brought together industry leaders, government officials, academe partners, and foreign dignitaries, along with international business chambers and partner associations.

It served as a vital platform for discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, aimed at navigating the industry through the transformative changes of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and beyond.

Over the years, the PSECE has evolved into a global event that provides a favorable venue for companies and countries to showcase their latest technologies, share best practices, establish business linkages, and strengthen government and academe relations.

The event’s highlights include over 250 foreign and local exhibitors who showcased their latest products, technologies, and innovative solutions during the three-day event.

Convention attendees gained insightful presentations from distinguished speakers in the semiconductor and electronics sectors.

Likewise, the event hosted prominent government leaders and representatives from higher education institutions, sharing their valuable expertise.

At the PSECE, this year’s discussions revolved around three key themes: "Next-Generation Manufacturing: Redefining the Future of the Philippine Electronics Industry"; "The Higher Education Sector’s Role in the Industrial Revolution 4.0"; and the ASEMEP National Symposium (ANTS).

PSECE 2023‘s pocket activities include SEIPI’s Job Fair and Networking Committees Breakout Learning Sessions where industry, academe, and government partners worked hand in hand in sharing their insights and extensive experiences.

The event culminated with SEIPI’s Fourth Quarter General Membership Meeting/CEOs Forum, centered around the theme 'Strategic Policies Towards Economic Development.'

SEIPI said it remains committed to organizing valuable events for its members and partners in the Philippine semiconductor and electronics industry.
