Makati City chosen as sole city in PH, Asia Pacific Region as finalist in World Smart City Awards 2023
The Makati City local government was chosen as one of the six finalists in the prestigious World Smart City Awards 2023 in Barcelona, Spain, making it the only city in the country and the whole Asia Pacific Region to be included in the feat.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay called on all Makatizens to pray for the city's victory in the event which received 411 entries from 63 countries.
Other finalists in the City Awards Category include "Barranquilla: Solving Development Challenges by Going Green" from Barranquilla, Spain; "Smart Alert System" from Izmir, Turkey; "Viver Cascais I Citizen centered service design" from Cascais, Portugal; "Curitiba Sustainable City" from Curitiba, Brazil, and "Connected for Success: Welcome to Sunderland, City of Smart" from Sunderland, United Kingdom.
"Ang ating entry, “Makati City’s IoT Revolution: Empowering the City to Become Better Stewards of Energy & Environment”, ay nagpapakita kung paanong ang Internet of Things o IoT devices at solutions ay lumilikha ng data-driven policies at positibong behavioral transformation sa ating mga residente. Sa pagsali sa competition, pinagtuunan namin ang positive effects ng mga inobasyon sa pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay at ang pangmatagalang epekto nito sa mga efforts tungo sa sustainability at resilience (Our entry, "Makati City’s IoT Revolution: Empowering the City to Become Better Stewards of Energy & Environment”, shows how the Internet of Things or IoT devices and solutions create data-driven policies and positive behavioral transformation to our residents. In joining the said competition, we put focus on the positive effects of innovation in our day-to-day living and long term effect in our efforts towards sustainability and resilience)," Binay explained.
"Ang smart meters, LoraWAN asset trackers, noise at outdoor pollution sensors, pati na rin ang indoor air quality sensors at BLE badge beacon, ay mga makabagong kagamitan na nagbibigay ng dagdag layer ng proteksiyon at seguridad sa ating komunidad. Sana ay palarin tayong manalo sa awards na ito (Smart meters, LoraWAN asset trackers, noise and outdoor pollution sensors, as well as indoor air quality sensors and BLE badge beacon are just some of the latest equipment that give an additional layer or protection and security in our community. Let's all hope for the city's victory in this award)," she added.
In 2019, Makati also became a finalist in the said competition where the mayor herself received the award from the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona for its entry "Use of technology to improve city disaster preparedness and communication to and from city citizens.”
The local chief noted that since then, the city government did not stop from creating programs and initiatives aimed at promoting innovation in the different sectors and aspects of living.

The annual World Smart City Awards is a prestigious international competition that seeks to recognize pioneering projects, ideas and strategies making cities around the world more livable, sustainable, and economically viable.
