PH advances to men's 4X400 final, shatters 38-year-old national mark

The Philippines advanced to the finals of the men’s 4x400-meter relay in record-breaking fashion in the 19th Asian Games at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Umajesty Williams led the charge as the crew also composed of Michael Del Prado, Joyme Sequita and Frederick Ramirez clocked 3 minutes and 6.15 seconds to top Heat 2.

Their performance also shattered the 38-year-old national record of 3:06.58 posted by Marlon Pagalilavan, Romeo Gido, Honesto Larce and Del Prado’s father, Isidro, at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

Overall, the Filipinos, who were also reigning Southeast Asian Games champions, were the third-best qualifier with India topping the list with a time of 3:03.81 followed by Qatar with 3:05.92.

Other qualifiers were Sri Lanka (3:06.60), Thailand (3:06.96), Korea (3:07.10), Bahrain (3:07.38) and Iraq with (3:07.58).

Also competing for the gold on Wednesday are Lauren Hoffman, Robyn Brown, Angel Frank and Maureen Schrijvers in the women’s 4x400m relay final.
