OPPO deserves a commendation just for the recent release of its newest smartphone the OPPO A98 5G which, in our short review stint, proved to be worthy of consideration if you're among those who love bargain-hunting.
Priced very competitively and presented at its recent launch as a mid-range offering, the OPPO A98 5G had us at its: impressively large and fast-acting display, above par camera features, fast-charging capability, sound speakers, and a software that does not relegate you down as second-class smartphone user.
As soon as we unboxed the OPPO A98 5G test unit, we immediately gave it our approval as its aesthetically pleasing design is comparable to the trend nowadays. It's sleek and stylish and proudly flashing the company's trademark Glow Design finish that provides a smooth, fingerprint- and scratch-resistant feel.
It promises durability through its innovative 3D Micro-Curved design, quite the lightweight and still picks up comfortably in one hand.
The 6.72-inch FHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate complements the 64MP triple rear camera system with a 40x microscope function, and a 32MP selfie camera.
OPPO claimed our unit "is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage and a "5000mAh battery with 67W SuperVOOC fast charging support." Indeed, it was.
Now, about cameras. (Please bear in mind that we, like most of you out there, are not professional photographers -- but we all love the good pictures we took and chose to brag in our social media.) As a "portrait expert," the OPPO A98 5G is like a true brother, a young one, to the renown OPPO A series.
Its main camera delivered post-processed and fine-colored shots that are worthy of posting in our FB and Instagram. In low lights, we gave it a passing grade and a bit higher rating while in Night Mode. The 2MP depth sensor shoots fine, and better when Face Beauty Mode is in play.
As in today's trend, close-up shots of flowers, leaves and insects are easily accomplished by the 2MP microscope lens. The 32MP front cam gave us decent selfies, even making us looked better in some shots.
Outdoors, screen brightness worked just fine, thanks, we think, to its 6.72-inch FHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The OPPO A98 5G is also Netflix and YouTube capable, with its decent audio and audible bass. The ultra-high refresh rate of 120Hz also helped maintain the images on screen to appear fluid and stable, a plus when switching from one application to another.
Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 octa-core processor, the OPPO A98 5G also boasts of 8GB RAM expandable thanks to OPPO's RAM Expansion technology, Adreno 619 GPU and 256 GB of built-in storage and support for micro SD cards with capacities of up to 1TB.
OPPO A98 5G’s 67W SUPERVOOC fast charging feature should make it as one heck of a come-on, and the 5,000 mAh battery which can reach maximum charge in just 44 minutes.
