DSWD to provide aid to family of deceased Rizal student

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday, Oct. 3 expressed condolences to the family of Grade 5 student, Francis Jay Gumikib, who died 11 days after being allegedly slapped by his teacher.
“Social workers from the DSWD-Field Office 4A have taken immediate action to support the bereaved family of Francis and provide them with essential assistance during this difficult time,” DSWD Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications Group and spokesperson Romel Lopez said.
DSWD-4A Regional Director Barry Chua has ordered a case management for the bereaved family and immediate financial assistance for hospital and funeral expenses.
Lopez said medical bills and funeral costs will be covered by the DSWD with a minimum financial assistance of P10,000.
Gumikib, a student at Peñafrancia Elementary School, suffered from headaches and ear pain, leading to internal brain bleeding and a coma before his untimely death.
“We will closely coordinate with the authorities and concerned agencies to ensure the welfare of the bereaved family,” Lopez said.
The Antipolo Police Station is conducting a criminal investigation, while the Department of Education will conduct a separate fact-finding and administrative probe.
Lopez said the DSWD will continue to support the Gumikib family and work closely with relevant agencies to ensure they receive the necessary interventions.
