DOST-STII holds first-ever STARBOOKS Whiz Bee

To showcase the intellectual prowess of students, the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) organized its first-ever STARBOOKS Whiz Bee in General Trias, Cavite.

In a statement released on Oct. 2, DOST said more than 90 Grades 9 and 10 students from Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School (GFMINHS) hosted and competed in the activity last Sept. 26.

During the event, DOST-STII Director Richard Burgos delivered a video message expressing the agency’s commitment to collaborate with students for the betterment of the country.

"From the DOST-STII, this is our promise to you: let's help each other for a successful, stable, and peaceful nation," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ramy R. Dalida, Principal of GFMINHS, said in his opening remarks, "It was historic on the part of Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School to host and simultaneously conduct this very important activity."

He thanked the DOST-STII for providing a valuable platform for teachers and students to showcase their intellectual capabilities.

The top 20 contestants made it to the semifinal round held on Sept. 28. While the five best scorers battled in the grand finals held later on the same day.

Alex G. Mahabague emerged as the first-ever STARBOOKS Whiz Bee champion, followed by Jewel Rose T. Bacquian, who secured first place.

Meanwhile, Anthony Gelenno L. Caliwag was the second runner-up.

Jankia Iju P. Vallejos was the third runner-up, and finally, Aeron Karl A. Talosig was in fourth place.

The winners received medals and gift certificates from the event's sponsors.

On the other hand, winners of the DOSTv and GFMINHS's Video Making Contest for teachers were also awarded cash prizes.

DOST pointed out that STARBOOKS and DOSTv are two of the institute's premier programs that have been included in the National Economic and Development Authority's National Priority Plan and have "won numerous awards for being innovative and game-changing."
