Behave in public places, Nartatez tells men after rookie cop shoots dead a man in QC bar scuffle
A 26-year old policeman was arrested after he shot dead a man following a heated altercation inside a bar in Novaliches, Quezon City early morning on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
The incident involving Patrolman Edwin Rivera prompted National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Brig. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez to be circumspective of their actions in public places and to refrain from drinking in bars, nightclubs and other public establishments.
“May this incident serve as a warning to all NCRPO personnel to conduct themselves properly at all times, take precautions, control their actions and do not risk the safety of people around them. No excessive use of authority will be tolerated under my watch,” said Nartatez.
Rivera was immediately disarmed and is now under the custody of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion while the investigation of the incident is underway.
Based on the investigation, Rivera was having a drinking session with his friends inside a bar at around 4:45 a.m. when a man approached him which later ended in a scuffle.
Witnesses told the police investigators that the suspect drew his firearm and shot the victim during the height of their altercation.
The victim was pronounced dead by attending physicians at Novaliches District Hospital where he was rushed by responding policemen.
“An extensive investigation is currently being conducted to establish the facts of the case and bring justice to the victim. I will assure you that the involved policeman will be held accountable for his actions,” said Nartatez.
