Filipinos with working relatives abroad should voted for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials who understand their situation and promote their welfare.
Thus, said Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo, chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs a day before the conduct of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
"I remind families of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to select and vote for barangay officials who not only understand but also empathize with their unique challenges," Salo said in a statement Sunday, Oct. 29.
"Families with absent parents or family members working abroad face distinctive hurdles, and it is imperative that our elected leaders comprehend and address these issues effectively," the veteran congressman said.
"The children of OFWs need guidance, and it is essential that the barangay officials, as community leaders, are able to extend this support. Thus, it is essential to vote for officials who would perform the functions of the state as parens patriae, acting as the parent of the nation, particularly for families of OFWs," Salo explained.
"By choosing leaders who prioritize the welfare of these families and uphold the values of integrity, vision, and dedication, we pave the way for a better and more progressive society," he further stated.
Salo urged the rest of the citizenry to exercise their right to vote during the upcoming on Monday, Oct. 30, election day.
"The elections serve as the cornerstone of a vibrant and healthy democracy. It is a testament to the collective will of the citizens, showcasing the essence of participatory governance. In exercising our right to vote, we affirm our commitment to the democratic ideals that our nation upholds," he said.
