Armed man enters Camp Crame, fires gun to protest poll 'corruption'

A bicycle-riding man managed to sneak past through what was supposed to be strict security measures at the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Friday afternoon, Oct. 27, and fired a gun to protest alleged corruption related to the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
Police Col. Jean Fajardo, PNP spokesperson, said the suspect, a 50-year-old resident of Caniogan, Pasig City, entered Gate 2 Sentry of Camp Crame around 1:40 p.m. while riding his bicycle.
"Upon reaching the Bulwagang Lapu-Lapu area, [the suspect] fired once his firearm which immediately caught the attention of HSS [Headquarters Support Service] personnel," Fajardo said.
Police Corporal Ronal Lejano and Patrolman Jo Rizal Ignacio, who happened to be within the vicinity of the place of incident, immediately subdued the suspect and confiscated his caliber .22 revolver.
Fajardo said that the suspect fired his gun "to protest the alleged corruption" related to the BSKE on Oct. 30.
The PNP has yet to elaborate on the suspect's motive as a follow-up investigation was launched by the responding police.
Aside from the fired gun, also recovered from the suspect were two live ammunition and an empty shell, two P100 peso bills, and assorted election fliers.
The suspect was brought to the PNP Forensic Group for medical and drug examinations.
The suspect may face several charges for illegal dishcarge of firearm and violation of Republic Act 10591 or "Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act" in relation to election gun ban.
Earlier in the day, PNP Chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. said the organization will be placed under full alert status beginning Saturday, Oct. 28, in preparation for the nearing elections.
