DAVAO CITY – Presidential Assistant for Eastern Mindanao Leo Tereso A. Magno on Wednesday, October 25, honored the heroism of courageous individuals who died during the Battle of Surigao Strait on October 25, 1944.
Magno, who attended the 79th Commemoration of the Historic Battle of Surigao Strait at the Boss Memorial Shrine in Surigao City, encouraged everyone to reflect on the insights derived from the battle and its pivotal role in defeating the Japanese occupation.

"What is important is to know how to move forward from this event. How you will go on with your life after the Battle of Surigao Strait," Magno said in his message.
According to historical records, many US ships in that battle sustained damage during the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941. These ships were raised from the bottom of the sea, repaired, returned into service, and used to decimate the Japanese naval fleet.
Magno expressed aspiration that the significance of the Battle of Surigao Strait would eventually become widely recognized, extending beyond the community in Surigao to encompass the majority of Filipinos.
He also discussed how the battle catalyzed Japan, Australia, and the United States to uphold peace and sustain their ties with the Philippines.
Earlier this year, Congress approved a P45-billion budget for the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), P6 billion higher than last year. Out of the amount, P27.5 billion was designated for planned expenses while the remaining P17.5 billion was reserved for unforeseen allocations.
"The Marcos administration has expressed its support to strengthen our naval forces and to engage and upgrade our naval equipment," Magno said, adding that the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Eastern Mindanao is open to Surigao City in any possible way it can help.
Magno acknowledged Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II and Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Lyndon Barbers for improving Surigao City and Surigao del Norte.
"These two are hardworking people. I witnessed it myself. Almost every week, I talk to Mayor Dumlao and, occasionally, with Gov. Barbers. They have a good plan for Surigao City and Surigao del Norte, respectively," Magno said.
The 79th commemoration of the Battle of Surigao Strait also renewed the strong relationship of the Japanese, Australian, American, and Philippine governments.
Also in attendance in the event were Lt. Col. James H. Kim representing the US Embassy and James Yeomans representing the Australian Embassy. The Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines, Kazuhiko Koshikawa, delivered a video message.
The Japanese Embassy reiterated its commitment to strengthen its relationship with the Philippines and continue its peace pursuit.
