West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has fixed over 27,000 pipe leaks in the third quarter as part of its ongoing effort to reduce non-revenue water (NRW).
In a statement, Maynilad said on Thursday, Oct. 26, that the repairs from July to September 2023 brought its total fixed leak repairs to 485,319 in the company's history.
Leak repairs are essential to manage NRW, also known as the water losses, that could affect residential and commercial areas.
Maynilad stated that the recent leaks were mainly found in Quezon City, Caloocan, and Manila.
A total of P4 billion was allotted by the concessionaire to implement the NRW Management Program.
Other than pipe repair, the initiative’s goal is to cover selective pipe replacement, network diagnostics, the establishment of district-metered areas, and the replacement of old water meters.
Since it took effect, around P449 million has been allocated for leak repair projects.
Moreover, some of the water disruptions conducted by the company are done in order to fix and maintain damaged pipes.
Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad chief operating officer, said the utility company has been actively working to restore water supply to meet the needs of customers, particularly during the hot season.
“Given the need to recover more water supply for distribution during El Niño, we have increased our manpower complement this year so we can swiftly implement leak detection and repairs,” Estrellado said.
“We thank the various local government units for likewise speeding up their issuance of the required permits for these activities,” he added. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
