The business community submitted to the Marcos administration a set of policy resolutions on 10 sectors aimed at achieving a first-world economic status by 2050 at the closing of the 49th Philippines Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Manila Hotel.
The 10-point 49th PBC Resolutions was presented by GBA Law Senior Partner and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Corporate Secretary Atty. Pablo Gancayco, who underscored that the resolutions were developed through consultations with various stakeholders, including the resolutions committee, PCCI’s local chambers, sectoral committees, and other major business organizations and councils.
“These resolutions capture our collective aspirations and expectations from [the] government working in partnership with us to achieve “Vision 2050: The Philippines A First-world Economy,” Gancayco said.
Topping the list of policy resolutions is the agriculture sector where the PBC urges the administration to develop a long-term plan to attain food security in agriculture and fishery through infrastructure support, technology transfer, product diversification, export enhancement, economies of scale, and improved value and supply chains.
The business group also called for the government to ensure adequate and affordable power supply throughout the country by considering modern technology and harnessing renewable energy resources that meet the criteria of reliability and affordability.
To strengthen the commitment to the environment and climate change, PCCI wants the government to update and continue the execution of the National Framework Strategy on Climate Change (2010- 2022) which envisions a climate-risk-resilient Philippines with healthy, safe, prosperous, and self-reliant communities and thriving and productive ecosystems.
To prepare the students for success in the digital age and the globalized world of work, PCCI is urging the government to propel the Philippine education system to world-class status by harnessing new technologies, fostering innovation, and implementing comprehensive reforms.
For the trade and industry sector, PCCI pushes the Marcos administration to empower industries and enterprises to enhance their competitiveness both in the domestic and international markets.
With the necessary tools, resources, and support programs from the national government, it will be able to contribute to economic growth and promote innovation in the country's industrial and trade sectors.
PCCI also wishes for the government to provide a stable and predictable business environment in the country by ensuring clear, consistent, and transparent regulations, streamlining and simplifying bureaucratic processes, reducing unnecessary red tape, and eliminating barriers that hinder business growth and development.
In addition, the national government is urged to implement a comprehensive national infrastructure, transportation, and logistics master plan that outlines a long-term vision for connectivity and country-wide development.
This strategy shall focus on decongesting urban areas by developing growth and business centers in various regions, generating employment opportunities, and promoting relocation outside Metro Manila.
To foster innovation and digitalization as an industrial policy towards economic growth, PCCI seeks the government implementation of a nationwide internet connectivity program that is comparable to ASEAN neighbors.
The national government is also urged to improve its tax incentive system, particularly for Registered Export Enterprises, and the application of cross-border doctrine to attract capital and foreign direct investments for government projects and economic growth.
The policy recommendations also include mainstreaming sustainable tourism by ensuring that travel terminals are safe and convenient, improving telecommunications connectivity, capacitating tourism workers, and promoting a Filipino brand of service that provides a superior tourist experience to visitors.
It has been a tradition for the annual business gathering, which is organized by PCCI, to present the PBC Resolutions at the end of the conference to the President, who is also expected to respond to the business proposals at the closing of the conference.
Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin received the PBC Resolutions in behalf of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
