ICTSI acquires new equipment for South Pacific terminal
Manila-headquartered International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) reported it has acquired new equipment to support its operations in the South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) in Port of Lae, Papua New Guinea.

These include two new Mitsui hybrid rubber tired gantries (RTGs) powered by a mix of a small diesel engine and lithium-ion battery.
The RTGs are expected to make landslide operations more efficient and make turnaround times faster for outside trucks. The hybrid RTGs will also emit less greenhouse gases (GHG), making it a more environmentally-conscious choice.
In addition, two new post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes were purchased last year. These cranes are said to be the "first of their kind" and are the largest port equipment in the Papua New Guinea terminal.
“The receipt of two electric STS cranes for the berth was the first big step of our terminal decarbonization journey, and we are very excited to receive these Hybrid RTG cranes, which show SPICT’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint from yard operations,” said ICTSI South Pacific CEO Robert Maxwell.
The ICTSI South Pacific Limited is a subsidiary of ICTSI, incorporated in 2017. It operates the Motukea International Terminal (MIT) in Port Moresby and SPICT in Lae Tidal Basin. It has invested over PGK 200 million in 2023 to "empower Papuan communities" through work opportunities and delivery services.
