Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas has reminded Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte of the reputation of former president Rodrigo Duterte's administration, which lasted from 2016 to 2022.
According to Brosas, this reputation is exactly the reason why the ex-president's death threat against her fellow Makabayan solon, ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro should be taken seriously.
"We support [Castro's] decision to file a grave threat case against former president Rodrigo Duterte. The death threats and red-tagging against [Castro] and other progressive groups aired on television are not mere criticisms but serious dangers to the lives of individuals," Brosas said.
Rep. Duterte is the former chief executive's son.
"We would like to remind [Rep. Duterte] that his father's statement should be taken seriously, considering his bloody legacy of extrajudicial killings and political persecution under his administration," she said.
On Tuesday, Oct. 24, Castro and her counsel filed a charge of grave threat against the former president, who had threatened to "kill" over the confidential funds issue during a television interview two weeks ago.
Earlier Wednesday, Rep. Duterte came out to defend his father by saying that he knows a lot of things about militant congressmen. He also said public servants shouldn't be "onion-skinned" when it comes to criticisms.
Brosas said that "It is also ironic that [Castro] is being called out by Rep. Duterte when ex-president Duterte hunted down ordinary people who criticized the government, and even had a highschool teacher arrested for merely voicing out his frustrations in social media."
"Let's drop this act of gaslighting and victim-blaming. The only people who needs to come clean and face the consequences of their actions are those who have been hiding behind their confidential funds and avoiding public scrutiny," she further said.
