DepEd probes teacher over physical punishment

TACLOBAN CITY (PNA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) pledged to investigate a public school teacher who allegedly went overboard with the punishment he imposed upon his students in Burauen, Leyte.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 25, the DepEd-Leyte division office said they immediately validated the incident that went viral on social media.

“Upon hearing the facts, the team convened with the school head and the concerned teacher. Subsequently, the DepEd initiated collaboration with the legal office to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident,” the Education department stated.

It also assured the public that this matter would be addressed with utmost urgency as it involves the learners’ rights and protection.

“(Our) primary objective is to ensure the creation of a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment for all students,” the statement added.

On October 24, a video of a public school teacher asking his students to squat inside a classroom has been shared by netizens on social media.

The video shows a male teacher holding a broomstick, apparently beating the learners.

Corporal or physical punishment, such as beating, is prohibited under the DepEd child protection policy issued in 2012.
