Treñas, Ganzon apologize for inviting controversial vlogger to Dinagyang countdown

ILOILO CITY – Mayor Jerry Treñas and Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon here have apologized for inviting a vlogger known for cursing online for the 100-day countdown for the Dinagyang Festival 2024.

“On behalf of the organizers of Dinagyang 2024, I would like to offer my apology since sensitivities were affected during the countdown,” said Treñas in a statement.
Kalinti by TBON (Adam Nerpiol in real life) was the main guest invited by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI) on October 20.
In the Hiligaynon language, the root word of “linti” refers to lightning. While some consider the word “kalinti” as an expression, many consider it as a curse word.
While on stage, Kalinti by TBON had a short skit that did not sit well with many Ilonggos who thought his presence as the main guest was inappropriate.
The Dinagyang, a festival held every fourth Sunday of January, is celebrated in honor of the Santo Niño (Child Jesus).
“As vice mayor, a parent, a grandfather, a servant of God and being an active church member, as a duly elected official of values-centered Ilonggos, I yield to the demand of concerned sectors especially the church, parents, and teachers on the remarks during the festival countdown,” said Ganzon in a statement.
Prior to the October 20 event, key city officials, including Treñas and Ganzon, met the vlogger and even posted photos with him visiting Iloilo City Hall in their official Facebook pages on October 10.
IFFI Executive Director Joyce Clavecillas explained that the popular overseas Filipino worker (OFW) vlogger from Bacolod City was invited as his talent fee was affordable and he can help market the festival and Iloilo in general.
But Fr. Angelo Colada, social communications director of the Archdiocese of Jaro, reminded IFFI to be cautious and should respect the devotees of the Santo Niño.
Treñas and Ganzon urged IFFI to properly coordinate with stakeholders for the remaining preparations for the Dinagyang 2024.
“We only want the best for Iloilo and the Dinagyang Festival as we take pride by saying, ‘Our heart beats for Iloilo.’ And if along the way, we trip, let us altogether rise above this and do better next time,” Ganzon added.
