PH, US security advisors tackle China's latest sea maneuvers
The security advisors of the Philippines and the US have talked to each other by phone to discuss China’s recent dangerous maneuver against Philippine personnel in the waters off Ayungin Shoal.
Philippine National Security Adviser Eduardo Año was assured by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan of Washington’s commitment to invoke its Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) in case of an armed attack on a Philippine asset in the South China Sea.
“Mr. Sullivan reiterated U.S. support for our Philippine allies following the PRC Coast Guard and maritime militia’s dangerous and unlawful actions on October 22 obstructing a routine Philippine resupply to Second Thomas Shoal,” a White House readout stated.
“Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Año reaffirmed the enduring alliance and friendship between our nations and discussed upcoming US-Philippine engagements and ways to further strengthen our close partnership,” it added.
The phone call followed a statement from the US State Department that said Washington is standing by the Philippines on the incident that led to collision of two boats from the Philippines and China.
The US called out China for putting at risk the lives of Filipino personnel aboard as well as for impeding a legitimate resupply mission.
“The unsafe maneuvers on October 22 and the PRC water cannoning of a Philippines’ vessel on August 5 are the latest examples of provocative PRC measures in the South China Sea to enforce its expansive and unlawful maritime claims, reflecting disregard for other states lawfully operation in the region,” the US statement read.
