Police arrest man for carnapping, robbery-extortion in QC


The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) District Anti-Carnapping Unit (DACU) arrested a man who allegedly stole the car of his former employer and tried to extort money from him in exchange for the return of the vehicle on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Police identified the suspects as Joel Mamac, 43, a resident of BF Homes, Parañaque City.

Based on the police report, the complainant, Sung Ho Park, called up DACU at 2:10 a.m. on Oct. 22. to report the carjacking of his black Toyota Alphard.

The victim said he parked his vehicle in their garage at Penepole Lane, Acropolis Village, Brgy. Bagumbayan, Quezon City, at 2 p.m. on Oct. 18.

However, at around 10 a.m.  on Oct.  21, he found out that his vehicle was no longer in its place.

The victim immediately reported the incident to the village security guard and requested for a review of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the area.

During the review of the CCTV footage, it was discovered that the suspect, Joel, a former driver of the victim, entered the village at around 6:40 p.m. on Oct. 20. on board a Hyundai Starex driven by an unidentified man.

At 8 p.m. on the same date, the suspect was seen driving the missing vehicle.

Park later received a Viber message from the suspect, demanding P100,000 in exchange for the return of his vehicle.

Based on the information given by Park, DACU conducted a follow-up operation, resulting in the arrest of the suspect at 6:50 p.m.  on Oct. 22. in front of a gasoline station on Diosdado Macapagal Avenue in Brgy. Tambo, Parañaque City.

Operatives confiscated from the suspect two vehicles -- a Toyota  Alphard and a Hyundai Starex.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect's cohort who is a resident of Multinational Village in Parañaque City.

Police the suspect will be charged with violation of Republic Act 10883 or the New Anti Carnapping Law of 2016 and robbery extortion.
