'Kanina pa kami nabubuwisit': Marcoleta cites wishy-washy LTFRB whistleblower in contempt

Jefferson Tumbado--the former Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) executive assistant who claimed corruption in the agency only to recant two days later--will be detained for the next 10 days in the House of Representatives. 

This, after the House Committee on Transportation cited him for contempt Monday afternoon, Oct. 23 upon the motion of SAGIP Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta. 

During the motu proprio investigation of the transportation panel, Marcoleta called out Tumbado for his supposed lies and his always-changing statements. The solon Tumbado reminds his of the literary piece "The boy who cried wolf". 

Marcoleta explained to Tumbado--who apparently has never heard of it--that the story was about a boy who had lied about being in danger so many times that villagers dismissed him when the time came that he truly needed help. 

"Wala kaming panahon para sa iyo. Paano mo [kami] mapapaniwala ngayon na nagsasabi ka na ng totoo? Kanina pa kami nabubuwisit sa iyo eh. Sa totoo lang, sinayang mo ang oras ng bawat isang pumunta rito," a ticked off Marcoleta told the whistleblower. 

(We don't have time for you. How will you now make us believe that you're telling the truth? You've been annoying us since this morning. To be honest, you've wasted the time of everyone who came here.) 

Congress is currently on a five-week recess. 

"Ang dali mong mag-sinungaling eh. Ito yung problema natin ngayon. Alam mo kung nasa Korte ka, hindi ka paniniwalaan eh (Lying is so easy for you. This is the problem we have now. You know if you're in court, they won't believe you)," added the veteran solon. 

Panel chairman, Antipolo City 2nd district Rep. Romeo Acop ordered the Legislative Security Bureau (LSB) to whisk Tumbado away to his detention room once the hearing is finished. 

Also present in the hearing was suspended LTFRB chairman Teofilo Guadiz III. Tumbado's corruption claims last Oct. 9 was the reason why he was placed on preventive suspension by Malacañang. 

But Tumbado dismissed any links Guadiz had to corruption in his recantion last Oct. 11 and in his statements during the hearing.

"Ano ang pagbabasehan namin para paniwalaan pa namin ang sinasabi mo ngayon tungkol dito sa recantation? Ano na lang ang natitira sa pagkatao mo sa umagang ito pan pwede naming paniwalaan?" asked the fuming Marcoleta. 

(What would be our basis for us to believe the contents of your recantation? What is left in your person thus morning that we can believe in?) 

Tumbado replied: “Ako po ay humihingi ng paumanhin sa nangyaring sigalot po na ito (I ask for apologies over this conflict)." 

"Ganoon lang kasimple? Yung NBI ba naniwala sa iyo? Palagay mo? (That's it? Do you think the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) even believes you?)" said the SAGIP congressman. 

Acop, for his part, has signified the conduct of more hearings on the matter. --Dexter Barro II
