Barbers lauds PDEA for decline of deaths under PBBM's 'bloodless drug war'

House Committee on Dangerous Drugs Chairman Surigao del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers has commended the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for the significant decrease in deaths that it recorderd in its anti-illegal drug campaign.  

“Your exceptional performance, outstanding efforts, and unwavering dedication to excellence have not gone unnoticed. We are looking forward to witnessing law enforcement agencies led by PDEA achieve even greater milestones in the fight against illegal drugs,”

Barbers said in a statement on Monday, Oct. 23. 

PDEA has recorded 19 fatalities from July 2022 to September 2023, or practically the entire length of the Marcos administration so far. 

This is a 52 percent drop from the 40 deaths recorded from 2020 to 2021 under the previous administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte. 

Barbers stressed that strategies for the campaign should be “just, humane, and without too much harm.” 

“Let us avoid unnecessary loss of life and suffering because of violence,” he said. 

Barbers noted that his committee would determine if legislation is needed to strengthen the “bloodless drug war” of incumbent President Marcos. 

“Let us see how we can boost the anti-drug war without resorting to violence, without eliciting anger and resentment from our people, and without drawing global attention and condemnation,” the veteran solon from Mindanao said. 

“Like food inflation and the other important concerns we are trying to address, the drug menace is a big problem.” 

“It destroys users, their families, and society. Drug lords, peddlers, their protectors, and corrupt law enforcers and politicians are the only ones benefitting from it,” he added. --Dexter Barro II.
