After the painful string of defeats dating back from the previous season, the Growling Tigers hung tough to snap their 19-game losing skid for a 1-6 record in the standings heading into the next round.
The last time UST won was back in Oct. 1 , 2022, during its opening game against Adamson, where Cabañero starred with a career-high 33-point line.
Cabañero, this time breached the double-digit mark in the first half and poured 11 more points all in the third to finish with 23 points including six rebounds.
UST stayed ahead throughout the match before Xyrus Torres unleashed back-to-back baskets including a triple in the third period to momentarily give FEU its first lead, 45-44, with 3:35 left.
Though FEU engaged UST in some nip-and-tuck affair in the second half to manage the gap, the Growling Tigers eventually zoomed to their biggest lead of the match at 65-54 on a Migs Pangilinan three-pointer in the closing period.
With under a minute in the match, UST held on to an eight-point lead after a Paul Manalang layup, 67-59.
"Masarap yung feeling kasi after a long time we won. Credit to the boys, they really gave it all. Nagsama-sama kami so yung bonding nila it helps," said UST deputy Japs Cuan as head coach Pido Jarencio lost his voice during the thrilling 40-minute affair and could not make it in the postgame interview.
By the time Jorick Bautista came to his senses and pulled the Tamaraws within five, 62-67, the clock was already winding down for a last-minute fightback.
Prior to the matchup, FEU is coming off its back-to-back breakthrough victories including a huge overtime 66-61 escape over defending champion Ateneo.
The Tamaraws struggled to make baskets when it counted the most and were even blanked for seven minutes in the second half before Torres drilled in a triple to get their bearings going, with 4:21 to go in the fourth period.
L-Jay Gonzales, Torres and Bautista paced the Tamaraws with 11 points each as they wound up with a 2-5 slate in the opening round.
