Phivolcs issues notice on seismic activities of Bulusan Volcano

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a notice on Sunday, Oct. 22, providing an update on the seismicity of Bulusan Volcano.

According to Phivolcs, the Bulusan Volcano Network has recorded 87 volcanic earthquakes since 5 a.m. on Oct. 14.

These volcanic earthquakes include 29 volcano-tectonic earthquakes associated with rock fracturing processes occurring at depths ranging from one to eight kilometers beneath the southern and western sectors of Bulusan Volcano.

Additionally, Phivolcs reported "weak to moderate" degassing at the active summit crater and vents. The volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emission averaged 241 tons per day on Oct. 22.

As of now, Phivolcs said the Bulusan Volcano remains under Alert Level 0, denoting a "normal" status.

However, there is an increased likelihood of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions occurring at the crater or summit area, Phivolcs warned.

Phivolcs has advised Local Government Units (LGUs) and the public to refrain from entering the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).

Furthermore, individuals residing in valleys and along river stream channels were urged to be vigilant during heavy and prolonged rainfall to mitigate potential risks from sediment-laden stream flows and lahars. (Lizst Torres Abello)
