House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs Chairman Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo wants Philippine authorities to whisk away Filipinos from Gaza as quickly as possible with the opening of the Egypt-Gaza border.
"We commend international organizations and great powers for the opening of the Egypt-Gaza border, a beacon of hope for the people trapped inside Gaza. This move offers a glimmer of relief, alleviating their suffering during these dire times," Salo said in a statement Saturday night, Oct. 20.
"It is crucial to seize this opportunity for the safe exit of Filipinos. We urge the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to coordinate closely with Egyptian officials and international organizations," he underscored.
It was from Gaza that Hamas rebel fighters launched thousands of rockets into Israel last Oct. 7 in a surprise attack. The two sides have been fighting ever since, with the death toll now over 4,300.
"It is imperative that we ensure Filipinos won’t be left behind when other nationalities are allowed to exit. Every effort must be made to bring our countrymen home swiftly and securely," Salo said.
The House leader further said that maintaining clear and constant communication with Filipinos during the operation was paramount.
"Timely updates and support are vital to assure our fellow countrymen that their government is working relentlessly to guarantee their safety and well-being," he said.
"Let us stand united, ensuring that no Filipino is left behind, and reaffirm our commitment to their welfare during this critical period," added Salo.
