NCR gov't officials support 'Makabata Helpline 1383'

Mayors and vice mayors of the local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) banded together to support the newly launched expanded "Makabata Helpline 1383" program of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) on Saturday, Oct. 21.
The Makabata Helpline 1383 is the banner initiative of the CWC, in partnership with PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Corporation, that establishes a primary hotline that caters to all of children's concerns, encompassing all kinds of child's rights violations.
When callers dial 1383 on their telephones or mobile phones, they will be redirected to the CWC hotline team who will answer and accommodate the calls. It aims to make referral and intervention processes easier and more accessible for children, especially victims of abuse and exploitation.
Among the LGU officials who attended the launch were Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, Mandaluyong City Vice Mayor Carmelita "Menchie" Abalos, and Muntinlupa City Vice Mayor Artemio Simundac.
Video messages were also shown from Mayors Eric Olivarez of Parañaque City and Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa City.
They each gave messages of support for the program, noting the commitments of their LGUs to protecting children's rights in their areas of responsibility.
Sandoval called the helpline as a "beacon of hope" for vulnerable children.
"The launch represents the manifestation of our collective will to safeguard the future of our nation. We declare that every child in Malabon and the whole nation deserves to grow up in an environment that nurtures their well-being, safety, and opportunities," said Sandoval.
"As City Mayor of Malabon, I pledge our unwavering support for the Makabata Helpline and its mission. We stand together for a safer and more compassionate community for our children," she added.
Abalos believes that the hotline can help reduce the number of children experiencing abuse or bullying online, noting the rise of technology and social media, with children as young as seven years-old possessing their own electronic gadgets.
"Bilang isang 'child-friendly' city sa buong Pilipinas, umasa po kayo na ang Mandaluyong ay tataguyod at patuloy na kakalingain ang mga karapatan ng bata (As a 'child-friendly' city in the Philippines, rest assured Mandaluyong will support and continue to uphold the rights of children," said Abalos.
Meanwhile, Simundac expressed Muntinlupa LGU's commitment to its obligation to protect children, who he said bring inspiration and joy to communities, hailing the project's potential to quickly respond to urgent cases of abuse.
"Kami po sa Lungsod ng Muntinlupa ay buong pusong tutulong at susuporta sa inyong adhikain (We, in the City of Muntinlupa, will wholeheartedly help and support your advocacy)," said Simundac.
Sandoval, Abalos, and Simundac also signed the pledge board to show their commitment to the helpline's cause, along with CWC Executive Director Undersecretary Angelo Tapales; Behzad Noubary, deputy representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Philippines; Victor Tria, first vice president (FVP) and sector head of PLDT-Smart Inc.'s Enterprise Revenue I; and Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Elaine Fallarcuna of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
