The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) quoted the Chief Executive’s speech during his visit to the Filipino community in Riyadh on Friday, Oct. 20.
“And I, as his son, and now as President will continue in the tradition,” Marcos said as he recalled his father’s visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1982, making him the first Philippine president to visit the Middle East country.
“Ipagpapatuloy po natin, at ‘yan po ang naging bahagi sa ating pagpunta rito ay para kausapin ulit ang ating mga kaibigan dito sa Saudi Arabia at hindi lamang sa Saudi Arabia kung hindi dito sa Middle East upang tiyakin na ang kalagayan naman ng ating mga mamayan, ng ating mga Pilipino ay nasa mabuti (Let us continue, and that is part of why I am here to talk our friends here in Saudi Arabia and not only here in Saudi Arabia but in the Middle East to ensure that welfare of our countrymen),” he added.
While forging good relations, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia have always maintained their communication lines open, especially on the welfare and concerns of the OFWs and the Filipino community.
Marcos shared that his father visited Saudi Arabia in 1982 and met His Majesty King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to renew the good relations between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia and to reassure the Kingdom that both countries will remain good friends.
The Philippines recognized the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Nov. 15, 1949 and both countries established diplomatic relations on Oct. 24, 1969.
The two countries will mark the 54th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive also acknowledged the contributions of OFWs in raising the reputation of Filipino workers around the world.
He vowed that their efforts will not go to waste, and that he is impressed and is proud of their “incredible determination and resilience.”
“On behalf of the government of the Philippines, I convey my gratitude and express my admiration to each and every one of you. You served as an inspiration to us all,” Marcos told the Filipino community there.
“The knowledge and the skills that you have acquired; ‘yung inyong galing at sipag habang kayo’y nandito (your excellence and hardwork while you are here) have proven to be invaluable assets to the Philippines,” he added.
The President visited the Filipino community in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the sidelines of his attendance to the first ASEAN-GCC Summit from Oct. 20 to 21 where he presented to the world leaders the investment opportunities in the Philippines.
