Petro Gazz survived Gerflor’s late rally to prevail 25-11, 25-4, 25-23 in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum on Saturday, Oct. 21.
The Angels turned to Nicole Tiamzon in the crunch to sweep the Defenders and clinch their second straight victory in as many outings.
Tiamzon paced Petro Gazz with eight points including the needed down-the-line spike that halted Gerflor’s bid of extending the match.
With the Angels leading 22-20, Danika Gendrauli stepped up for the Defenders by draining back-to-back kills to tie the match at 22-all.
A service ace from Gerflor turned tables around as Tiamzon nailed a crosscourt spike for match point, 24-22, before Marian Buitre’s service error briefly breathed life to the Defenders’ campaign.
But the Angels did not want to waste more time as Tiamzon continued her assault with the needed kill that sealed their victory.
Buitre also finished with eight points for Petro Gazz, while Ranya Musa and Grethcel Soltones chipped in seven points apiece.
Gerflor absorbed its second straight defeat with Mary Grace Berte and Menchie Tubiera finishing with six and five points.
So lethargic were the Defenders that they were only able to convert 18 kills, one block and one serve against the Angels’ 40 attacks, six blocks and eight aces.
Gerflor also gave up 21 points on errors.
