“Based on the information from the family, she’s dead. I was with her sister earlier,” Amboy said in a phone interview on Friday, October 20.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) went to the Prodigo residence in Barangay Burak, Maasin on Thursday, October 19, to report her death.
The 45-year-old caregiver was seized on October 7 when Be'eri, which is close to the Gaza Strip, was attacked.
Hamas barged into the residence of Cabrera’s employer and held her at gunpoint.
Contrary to earlier reports, the adult child of Cabrera’s 85-year-old lady employer was not present during the incident.
Only Cabrera and the octogenarian were in the house.
Paterna, Cabrera’s 72-year-old mother, said that her daughter went with Hamas fighters so that her ward won’t be harmed.
Cabrera is married and has an adopted child. Before working in Israel, she was employed in Hong Kong.
Amboy assured the Prodigo family that the local government of Maasin will take all the necessary steps to facilitate the repatriation of her remains.
Cabrera is the second fatality in the Israel-Hamas conflict from Western Visayas. The first was Loreta Alacre, an OFW from Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
