The fatality was identified as Allan Villanueva, a native of Albuera, Leyte.
Police said Villanueva dug up a hole inside a house in Barangay Can-Upao in what was believed to be a treasure-hunting activity. The house is owned by Richard Aclan.
Villanueva had already dug up a hole about 15 meters deep when he hit an object.
The object emitted a gas that was suspected to be poisonous and the victim lost consciousness after inhaling fumes. His companion, Rodel Perez, tried to rescue him but also lost consciousness after inhaling gas.
For fear that they may also be poisoned, neighbors waited for the gas to dissipate before they pulled the two men out of the hole.
The two men were taken to a hospital where Villanueva was declared dead. Perez was still under observation, police said.
Police said the incident is still being investigated.
