Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo said he was "greatly comforted" by Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss' words regarding the state of Filipinos in Israel amid the country's raging conflict with Hamas rebel fighters.
“In a time of great concern for the safety and well-being of our fellow Filipinos caught in the Israel-Hamas conflict, we are greatly comforted by the assurance of the Israel ambassador to the Philippines," Salo said in a statement Friday, Oct. 20.
"It is with deep relief that we receive this affirmation of the welfare and protection of our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Israel,” he said.
Salo, chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, met with Fluss on Thursday, Oct. 19 to get up to speed on the efforts taken by the Israeli government to protect and care for OFWs and overseas Filipinos.
Fluss informed the Kabayan congressman of the successful evacuation of around 60,000 residents, including Filipinos, in areas surrounding Gaza Strip.
He said the relocated Filipinos are now staying in safer areas, either in the homes of their employers or hotels, and are receiving necessary medical care.
It was from Gaza that Hamas launched thousands of rockets into Israel last Oct. 7 in a surprise attack. The two sides have been fighting ever since, with the death toll now over 4,300.
As for the four Filipinos who tragically lost their lives from the attack in Israel, the envoy assured Salo that the necessary documents are being readied for the immediate repatriation of their remains.
“We deeply mourn the passing of our fellow Filipinos who were among the victims of the terror attack. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and loved ones,” Salo said.
Fluss also assured Salo that the repatriation expenses of their remains will be shouldered by the Israeli government.
The families of the fatalities will also be given assistance for funeral and commemoration expenses, monthly payments for spouses and parents during their lifetime, as well as housing grants, loans and health payments, when applicable.
"We are grateful for the support provided by the Israeli government, not only in shouldering the repatriation expenses but also for extending social security benefits to the families of the terror victims," Salo further said.
