Classes suspended in Davao de Oro after 5.9-quake


DAVAO CITY – Gov. Dorothy P. Montejo-Gonzaga suspended face-to-face classes on all levels in Davao de Oro after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck the province at 2:58 a.m. on Friday, October 20.

CLASSES were suspended on Friday, October 20, after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake rocked Davao de Oro. 

Gonzaga said in a memorandum order that local authorities need to conduct structural integrity assessments on infrastructures to ensure the safety of school children.

He directed government agencies to ensure the safety of their personnel and encouraged them to conduct structural integrity assessment in coordination with their respective local government units.

Franz Irag, information officer of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Davao, reported that power interruption was experienced in Pantukan in Davao de Oro and Caraga, Lupon, San Isidro, Tarragona, and Mati City in Davao Oriental shortly after the tremor hit but was restored as of 6:56 a.m.

Irag said that assessment of possible damage in quake-affected areas is ongoing.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the epicenter of the tectonic earthquake was  35 kilometers southeast of New Bataan in Davao de Oro.

The earthquake affected parts of Mindanao.

It was felt at Intensity V in Davao Oriental and New Bataan, Maragusan, Davao de Oro, and Pantukan; Intensity IV in Nabunturan, Compostela, Monkayo, Mawab, Montevista, Laak, Mabini, and Maco in Davao de Oro; Intensity III in Davao City and Tagum City in Davao del Norte, and Intensity I in Bislig City and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur.
